There have been many studies conducted on beneficial diets for patients with IBS and many researchers conclude that increasing teh consumption of fiber provides numerous benefits in reducing inflammation.

A study published in 2022, showed that the use of fiber increases the number of bacterial strains that produce short chain fatty acids. Short chain fatty acids are fatty acids produced by the microbiome which are anti-inflammatory. Specifically, the short chain fatty acids which are most beneficial are called acetate and butyrete. This study showed that fiber helps increase the bacteria in the gut that produce both. Because of this, the consumption of fiber can be extremely benefitial for patients with IBS and can be anti-inflammatory for inflammatory gut conditions (Rijnaarts et al., 2022).
